Lead Follow Get-Out-of-the-Way
Lead, Follow, or Get-out-of-the-Way is a great phase that I learned from one of my business mentors.
It so happens to apply to Special Olympic Floor Hockey and a ‘learning moment’ occurred for me while coaching my youngest son’s team. As much as I was proud to be a coach with my oldest son, I realized in the middle of a tournament that my skills lay more in the administration side rather than the strategy and tactical side of hockey.
The team was getting frustrated with our performance. I quickly shifted from leader to follower as Connor rallied Lucas’ team to get them focused with short instructions on specific tasks, re-organized the lines, and got the team’s head back in their game.
Having the awareness and courage to let others lead, creates a much stronger team and better results.
